Hair Oil + Marham: How to Use Both Together for Faster, Stronger Results
Most people who struggle with hair fall make the same mistake. They buy a good hair oil, apply it a few times, wait a few weeks, and when results feel slow, they assume the product is not working. What they do not realise is that they are only using half of the solution.
At Hakeem Musa, we have seen this pattern thousands of times. The answer is almost always the same: hair oil and marham are designed to work together, not separately. When used in the right order at the right time, they create a complete herbal treatment that works at every layer of the scalp and the results speak for themselves.
This guide explains exactly how to do it.
What Is Marham and How Is It Different from Hair Oil?
Before we get into the method, it helps to understand what each product actually does.
Hair oil is a liquid formula designed to penetrate deep into the scalp. When massaged in, it improves blood circulation to the hair roots, nourishes the follicles with herbal actives, and helps create the right conditions for healthy hair growth. Think of it as feeding the roots from the inside.
Marham is a thicker herbal cream or ointment. Where oil penetrates, marham protects. It sits on the surface of the scalp, forms a healing barrier, and locks in moisture and the herbal treatment you have just applied. In traditional Unani medicine, this principle has been understood for centuries: oil opens and feeds, marham seals and heals.
Used alone, each product is effective. Used together in the correct sequence, they become a powerful complete system one that penetrates, nourishes, and protects all in a single routine.
Hakeem Musa's marham range includes the Simple formula for everyday care and the Super Active formula for more intensive treatment. Each is formulated to pair directly with the corresponding hair oil in our range.
Step-by-Step Application Method
This routine takes about 10–15 minutes and is best done in the evening before bed.
Step 1: Part your hair into sections Use a comb to divide your hair so your scalp is fully exposed. Do not skip this step applying oil on top of hair instead of directly onto the scalp dramatically reduces how much actually reaches the roots.
Step 2: Warm the oil and apply to the scalp Take a few drops of your Hakeem Musa hair oil and warm it between your palms for a few seconds. Apply it directly along each parting and across the scalp. A little goes a long way you do not need to soak your hair.
Step 3: Massage for 5–7 minutes Using your fingertips (not your nails), massage the scalp in slow circular motions. This is not optional. Massage increases blood flow to the follicles, which is what carries the herbal actives to where they are needed most. Spend extra time on any areas where you notice thinning or hair fall.
Step 4: Apply the marham on top Take a small amount of marham roughly the size of a pea for each section and apply it directly onto the oiled scalp. Focus on problem areas such as the hairline, crown, or anywhere you notice breakage. Spread it gently without rubbing too hard.
Step 5: Leave it on for at least 2–3 hours For best results, leave the treatment overnight. While you sleep, the oil and marham continue working and your body's natural overnight repair process works alongside the herbal treatment.
Step 6: Wash with a herbal shampoo In the morning, wash your hair with a mild, sulphate-free herbal shampoo. We recommend the Joonda Herbal Shampoo by Hakeem Musa for both men and women. Avoid harsh shampoos with chemical stripping agents — they undo much of what the treatment just did.
How Often Should You Apply?
Consistency is more important than quantity. A small application done regularly will always outperform a heavy application done once in a while.
For active hair fall or thinning: Apply the oil + marham routine at least 3 times per week for the first four weeks. This gives the scalp the sustained nourishment it needs to begin repairing.
For maintenance after you have seen improvement: 1 to 2 times per week is enough to maintain healthy hair and prevent recurrence.
Overnight is always best. Your body enters repair mode while you sleep. The herbal actives in both products continue absorbing and working through the night, making overnight application significantly more effective than a quick 30-minute application.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even with good products, small errors in application can slow your results considerably. Here are the most common ones:
Applying marham without oil first. Marham works as a sealant. If there is nothing underneath to seal in, you lose most of its benefit. Always apply oil first, massage it in, then apply marham on top.
Using too much product. A thick, heavy application does not mean a better result. It just means harder washing and a greasy scalp. Thin, even coverage absorbs better and works more effectively.
Washing off too quickly. Rinsing after just 20 or 30 minutes does not give the herbs enough time to absorb. Aim for a minimum of 2 hours overnight if possible.
Using a harsh, chemical shampoo to wash off. If your shampoo contains sulphates or strong synthetic fragrances, it strips the scalp and undoes the work your treatment just did. Switch to a herbal shampoo for your wash days.
Stopping too early. This is the most common reason people feel their treatment is not working. Herbal treatments work gradually and sustainably. Most people begin to notice reduced hair fall around week 3 or 4, with visible new growth appearing between week 5 and 8. If you stop at week 2, you will miss the results that were just around the corner.

What to Expect Week by Week
Here is an honest, realistic picture of what consistent use looks like:
Week 1–2: The scalp begins to feel less dry and irritated. Itching and flakiness reduce. You may not see dramatic changes yet, but the foundation is being laid.
Week 3–4: Hair fall begins to noticeably slow. Hair that remains feels stronger and less brittle when you comb or style it.
Week 5–8: New growth becomes visible, particularly at the hairline and parting. Hair appears thicker, shinier, and more manageable. This is the phase that makes all the consistency worthwhile.
Every person's hair responds at its own pace depending on the underlying cause of hair fall, age, diet, and consistency of use. Slower progress is still progress. The key is not to stop.
